H.B. “Mack” McSpadden, 87, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2011 at his home in Oak Grove, MO. Mack was born January 9, 1924 in Loudon, Tennessee, the son of Dossa and Connell McSpadden. He spent his entire career in the printing industry, both as a craftsman and salesman. He was a proud member of the Printing Union.
Mack graduated from High School in 1941 and moved to Washington D.C. to work for the F.B.I. and began his career in the printing trade. As an only son, he was exempt from military service but wanted to serve his country and enlisted in the Navy during WWII. When he was stationed in San Diego, CA, he met and married Janie McClure, his wife of 64 years who was his best friend, cheerleader, and soul mate. Together they had three children, Connie Decker of Raytown, MO, Bruce and Marilyn McSpadden of Lee’s Summit, and Mary Hearn, also of Lee’s Summit; eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
In retirement, Mack had a variety of interests, including gardening and woodcarving. He was active in his church and community. Mack was a “Southern gentleman”, modest and unassuming, setting an example for his family by treating everyone with kindness and respect. He was a man of honor and honesty was his hallmark. We celebrate his life and the difference he made in all of ours.
We want to thank Dr. Steven Gialde and the Oak Grove Clinic staff, as well as Mack’s long-time neighbors and friends for the love, care, and support they provided the last few years of his life. His family takes comfort knowing that he is now reunited with his life’s companion who was the center and compass of his life.
Services will be Wednesday, December 7, at the Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at 12:00, followed by a celebration of his life at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes contributions to the Janie McSpadden Memorial Fund at the church.
