Richard P. Luckerman

It is with heavy hearts, that we had to say goodbye to our beloved husband, father, grandfather/papa, and friend, Richard “Dick” Luckerman, 81, who passed away peacefully on February 6, 2024 surrounded by his family.

Richard was born on June 12, 1942 in Cincinnati, OH. He was one of six children to Christoph and Pauline Luckerman.  He graduated from Indian Hills HS in Cincinnati in 1960. He spent two years at the University of Cincinnati before pausing his education to join the Army. After about a year and a half in the Army, he returned to college at Ohio State University (OSU). He graduated from OSU in 1965. He went on to serve a total of six years in the Army Reserves.

Richard met Suzanne, his wife of 57 years, as he was finishing college. They married soon after his graduation and moved to Kansas City, MO where he had secured employment with Hallmark. He continued his education while working full time and earned a MBA from University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC). Richard was a key contributor to the growth of Hallmark for 35 years and retired to start his next and final job as Papa in January 2001.

Richard and Suzanne initially raised their children Brian and Lisa in Independence, MO and then moved to Blue Springs, MO in 1977 where they stayed for 45 years. Richard was very active in their sports including coaching them in their early years and then attending their games when they were older. Richard’s greatest joy came from being a grandfather to Alex, Sara, Kate, Nathan, and Zachary—a role he embraced with open arms and unwavering excitement.

Richard was a man of the outdoors, and from an early age found a life-long appreciation for nature. Whether it was hiking through the many national parks across the country, creating and   updating orienteering maps of the various parks around the Kansas City area, or cheering on his beloved Kansas City Royals and Chiefs, Richard found peace and contentment in the embrace of his passions and being surrounded by his family.

Richard is survived by his wife, Suzanne (Buck) Luckerman, Lees Summit, MO; his children and their spouses, Brian (Jennifer) Luckerman, Denver, CO; Lisa (Mark) Fletcher, Lees Summit, MO.; two brothers, Bob (Debbie) Luckerman, Hamilton, OH; Ron (Rhoda) Luckerman, Bradenton, FL; five grandchildren, Alex Luckerman, Sara Fletcher, Kate Luckerman, Nathan Fletcher, and Zachary Fletcher. He was preceded in death by his parents, Christoph and Pauline (Nigg) Luckerman; Don Luckerman, Bill Luckerman, and his sister, Nancy Morris.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Richard on March 30th at Lake Tapawingo Club House Dockside Drive, Lake Tapawingo, MO 64015. The visitation will be from 11-12 with the celebration of life beginning at noon. Lunch to follow catered from one of Richard’s favorite, Jack Stack BBQ.

  1. I only met Dick a few times at orienteering events, but I’m so very grateful for his work. Orienteering is a niche sport, so we have to make our own fun. Making maps is time-consuming and detail-oriented work. Dick’s contribution to Possum Trot’s library of maps is a lasting legacy that brings joy to our club members and the hundreds of others that join us in our shared passion.
