Martha was born December 23, 1948 in Kansas City, Kansas to John and Mary Swearingen. She graduated from Shawnee Mission High School in 1966. Martha was a cancer survivor of Hodgkin’s Disease that she battled in the 1970’s. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and caring friend. Her faith in Jesus Christ was very deep. She was always very thankful to the family in her life that lead her to Christ all those years ago. Martha loved listening to music (Especially Elvis), horses, bowling, badminton, walking on trails, reading her bible, traveling and being with her family and friends. Later in life, as she developed Parkinson’s Disease, she was unable to do many of the things she once enjoyed. God gave her a tremendous amount of strength through her faith and she was a wonderful example of bravery and determination. We all have special comfort knowing she is in heaven. She has no more pain, no more side effects from meds, no more sick feeling from watching the news, she is now able to walk and I’m sure she is dancing
She is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Judy and Jeanie; first husband, Charles E. Smith in 2002; second husband, Larry Carey in 2019.
Martha is survived by two sons: Gary Smith (Tammy) of Buckner, MO. and Dennis Swearingen; two grandsons, Trenton Smith (Kylie) of Blue Springs, MO. and Aaron Smith of Buckner, MO; granddaughter, Courtney Swearingen; nephew Samson McKee.

22 May 2024Janey was a sweet and beautiful soul. Her son Gary and I have known each other since we were teens when he met my best friend Tammy and they fell in love. Gary has always been like a brother to me. His family was my family. Janey loved her family and friends. She left this world knowing she was loved in return. Everyone that knew her will smile each time they think of her.
