Charles L. Pennington

Charles Leroy Pennington who was known as “Chuck” by everyone was called to heaven on Wednesday June 19, 2024.

Chuck was born in Independence, Missouri on January 30, 1937. After graduating from Van Horn High School, Chuck was drafted in to the Army and served his country well in Korea. In typical Chuck fashion, any military Jeep within reach of him got its carburetor and timing tweaked to make it go faster. Shortly upon his return home from Korea, he asked a good friend of his to drive him by Jane Lyons’ home as he wanted to visit her. That visit went well. Soon thereafter in 1961, Chuck and Jane were married and began an amazing journey together. While in Independence, Chuck started his own gas station and car service center. “Chuck’s 66 Service” on 24 Highway in Independence. At the same time, he and Jane started a family and had 3 sons. In 1971 the family relocated to San Antonio, Texas. Chuck and Jane poured their lives into their sons as the family traveled around racing quarter midgets and then later BMX bicycles. To be closer to family, in 1987 they moved back to Independence. All of that Texas bicycle activity led Chuck to open The Bike Stop Bicycle Stores in 1988. He forged any relationships there. He ultimately retired out of the bike store and turned it over to his sons. He spent his years in retirement restoring the family roadster known as ‘Red Fever” and taking it around to car shows with much success. Chuck was a simple straight forward man. Very unselfish, his proudest accomplishments were nothing of his own, but instead the accomplishments of his wife and sons and grandchildren.

Chuck is survived by his sons Todd (Michelle), Scott, and John (Janet) and his sisters Sharon Rapp, Sandra Olinger, and Beverly Pace. He was very fond of his grandchildren Andrew Pennington, Georgiana Lawley, Matthew Pennington, Malissa Pennington, Amy Pych and Aaron Phillips. He was blessed with many great great children as well.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Janie, his father Frank Pennington and mother Bernice Pennington.

Visitation and funeral will be Friday June 28th at 10:00 am with the funeral beginning at 11:00 am at Royer’s New Salem Funeral Home – 1823 N Blue Mills Road, Independence, Mo 64058.

  1. Chuckster was my perfect neighbor for three decades. It’s like losing a brother. He’s with Janie at their mansion. I’ll be lucky to get a pup tent on their lawn.
