Samuel “Sam” Dayle Ferguson, 86, at his home in Blue Springs, Missouri passed away Thursday, March 2, 2017. Sam has been cremated. A visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8th at Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. also at the funeral home. His ashes will be buried in Lawrence with his beloved wife, Dorothy and also in Windsor with his parents, brother (Ryland), and grandparents. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dorothy S. Ferguson Education Fund, , c/o First United Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Dr., Lawrence, KS 66049.
Sam was born on November 12, 1930. His parents were Samuel W. and Cleo C. Ferguson of Lawrence, KS and Windsor, MO. Sam married Dorothy S. (Stringham) Ferguson and they were married almost 60 years before her death, November 26, 2011. Sam is survived by two children, Janice Lawton and Paul Ferguson, spouses J.C. Lawton and Deborah Ferguson, two grandchildren, Rebekah Gray and Curtis Hohensee and beloved friend Pat Bradley.
Sam was a Korean-war Air Force veteran, upon his Honorable Discharge, he earned a BA from Baker University and an MBA from University of Indiana. He received recognition as an Accredited Executive in Personnel and served as a Human Resource Executive in Kansas City Kansas, Lawrence Kansas, Newport Indiana, New York City, Chicago, and Kansas City, Missouri.
Sam was active in church and civic activities. He served as a city alderman and chaired various church committees. He was President of an ambulance district, organized local blood drives, and a leader in United Way campaigns.
Sam was a KU Jayhawks booster. He loved attending KU, Chiefs, and Royals games. He played industrial league softball and basketball until age 40, continued to play golf until health limitations prevailed.
