Esther Cogan


Esther Cogan, 96, of Bates City, Missouri, passed away on Monday, December 7, 2020.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 12th at Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove, MO; burial in Floral Hills Cemetery, Kansas City, MO.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Esther was born May 13, 1924, in Birch Tree, Missouri, the daughter of William and Ruth (Robinson) Shelley.  She was an Elementary School teacher for the Oak Grove School District and for Living Way Christian School in Oak Grove.  Esther later worked at Mid Continent Library.  She was a member of Faith in Christ Fellowship in Oak Grove and of the Eastern Star.  Esther enjoyed quilting and started a quilter’s group that helped make quilts for Children’s Mercy.  She also taught beginning quilters.  Esther was an avid reader, loved to travel, was a member of a square-dancing group, and enjoyed working at the food pantry at her church.

Esther was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Phyllis Diane in 1948; her husband, Jim Cogan in 1995; her parents; sister, Lois Hayes; three brothers: Lloyd Shelley, Carl Shelley, and Glenn Shelley; and son-in-law, Richard Wilson.

Her survivors include three children: Glen Cogan (Dorothy) of Odessa, MO, Joy Wilson of Bates City, and Tim Cogan (Sandy) of Bates City; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

    Many sweet memories of her warmth and love through the years. She lived and long and wonderful life full of joy, she’s going to be with you all in spirit. You will still feel her warmth radiating around you, I pray.
