Robert C. Harmon, 95, of Blue Springs, Missouri passed peacefully from this life into the arms of his loving Lord on Sunday, March 2, 2008, at his winter home in Sun Lakes, Arizona. He was born to Conley and Sallie (Ragsdale) Harmon in Odessa, Missouri on December 4, 1912. He attended Odessa High School for three years, finishing his senior year in Training High School of Central Missouri State Teachers College where he received an Honorary Doctorate from Central Missouri State University in 1996. He served four years in the United States Marine Corps.
On May 23, 1937, he married Mildred I. Johnson, who preceded him in death in 2003 after 66 years of marriage. They lived their married lives in Kansas City, Missouri, Lawrence, Kansas, Grain Valley, Missouri, Sun Lakes, Arizona, and Blue Springs, Missouri.
Mr. Harmon worked for the Kansas City Police Department and Aerion Manufacturing. He founded Harmon Electronics in 1946, which became Harmon Industries, a worldwide supplier of railroad safety equipment. He retired in 1969 but continued service to the company as chairman and member of the Board of Directors.
Mr. Harmon faithfully attended and served his Lord at Grain Valley Christian Church, Blue Springs Christian Church, and Chandler Christian Church at his Arizona winter home. He was a volunteer for SCORE and The Gideons International in Missouri and Arizona and was involved in many charitable causes and scholarship programs. He provided inspiration and encouragement to countless people in his life.
Mr. Harmon enjoyed traveling, golf, crossword puzzles and computer solitaire games. He worked with Mildred using her artwork for computerized Christmas cards and matted & framed her paintings. He was always up-to-date with modern technology and current events.
His survivors include one song and daughter-in-law: Gene & Debra Harmon of Lee’s Summit; one daughter and son-in-law: Diane & Wally McClure of Mesquite, Nevada; three grandchildren: Rob Harmon (Teresa), Michele Thurston (Tres), and Kent McClure (Trudi); three great-grandsons: Phin & Reese Harmon and Loren McClure; several nieces and nephews; and many beloved friends.
Services will be held at Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley, Missouri. Visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 10th. The Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11th. Burial will be in Blue Springs Cemetery.
