Phyllis LaPell

It is with sadness at the suddenness, but with joy at the long time we knew her and loved her, that we tell you of the passing of Phyllis Herring LaPell.  She died at 3 am on Wednesday morning, June 25, at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, MO.

She was a small-town girl who decided she wanted to see the world, have adventures, live far and wide and deep.  And that’s what she did.  She loved people, stories, jazz, family, a guy named Bud, small dogs, happy hour, and a good conversation.   She was there for so many of us when we were going through growing pains and changes.  After living in Georgia, Alaska, and California, she came back to the Missouri hills she loved for the last chapter.

Phyllis was the youngest of 5 children born to Pollard and Hester Herring.  She was born at home in rural Carroll County, MO, on September 1, 1935.  Her brothers, Edwin, Donald, and Will T. all passed before.  She is survived by her sister, Mable Walkenhorst.  Her son and his wife, Stuart and Barb White, and their children, Hailey and Libby, and a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews, and many friends across the country also hold her memory dearly.

We love you Phyllis.  Thanks for being the character you were.
