Derek Joseph Poindexter, 47, of Blue Springs, Missouri, passed away on August 10, 2018 at his home. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday August 18th at First Baptist Church of Oak Grove, 400 SE 14th Street, Oak Grove, MO 64075. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until service time at the church. In lieu of flowers Derek requested donations in his name to “Be Head Strong” at www.beheadstrong.org
Derek was born May 10, 1971 in Kansas City, Missouri. He grew up in Oak Grove and attended Oak Grove Schools. His family moved to Scottsdale, AZ, in 1984 and Derek graduated from Chaparral High School. Upon moving back to Oak Grove in 1994, he started working for the Ford Motor Claycomo, MO Plant and continued through 2010. Derek was diagnosed with Recurrent Anaplastic Astrocytoma and over the next eleven years endured six brain surgeries with the loving support of family and an army of friends. He loved watching the Royals, Chiefs, and NASCAR. Derek and Kim enjoyed trying new foods from all cultures and cooking. He took great pride in watching his daughter grow up and was so proud of her. Derek had a large social network of friends that were very dear to him and a big reason he fought on for so many years. You knew he truly appreciated having you as a friend. He never gave in to cancer, always keeping his fun-loving attitude and sense of humor.
Derek is survived by his wife, Kim Poindexter; daughter, Caitlyn Poindexter; stepson, Josh Bush; parents, Diana and Greg Kessler; sister, Sherrie Rogers; father and mother-in-law, Jim and Mai Eastin; uncle and aunt, Richard and Sharry Calvert; and many cousins and extended family. He was preceded in death by his birth father, Gordon Poindexter; niece, Toni Rogers; grandparents, Bobby and Sarah Calvert, and Lester Kessler.
