Larry G. Philpott


Larry Gene Philpott, 77, of Oak Grove, Missouri, passed away on Friday, October 1, 2021.  Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 7th at First Baptist Church of Oak Grove.  The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until service time at the church.

Larry was born on December 1, 1943, in Buckner, Missouri, the son of Kenneth and Janice (George) Philpott. He was a 1961 graduate of Oak Grove High School. On August 24, 1962, Larry married Wanda Jean Winkle, and they lived most of their lives in Oak Grove, MO, where they raised their two children. He was a glazier for Local Union 558, later becoming the Business Agent for the Local. After retiring from the Local, he became a driver for Salley’s Propane in Bates City, MO. Larry was a member of the William Clarke Quantrill Society, the Oak Grove Historical Society, and the National Rifle Association. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Oak Grove, MO. Upon his retirement, Larry and Wanda lived at Truman Lake in Warsaw, MO. They also spent their winters in Florence, AZ. Larry enjoyed volunteering his time in the lapidary of their Caliente Casa de Sol community where he made various types of gemstone jewelry. He and Wanda also enjoyed fishing, antiquing, traveling, and taking rides together on their golf cart. He was a car enthusiast and loved the years spent driving his Corvettes. Larry was a meticulous craftsman and loved working with his hands.  He was a historian, loved music, westerns, and John Wayne.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 53 years, Wanda, and his son, Jeffrey Wayne Philpott.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Jeff Walton of Oak Grove; five grandchildren: Jacob Swisegood and wife Deanna, and Allison Walton, Oak Grove, Justin, Jordan and Jenner Philpott, Blue Springs, MO, and two great-grandchildren, Peyton Melcher and Portlynn (PJ) Swisegood, Oak Grove; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Judy and Harold Witte, Independence; two nephews: Joe Winkle, Washington, D.C., Karl Witte, Smyrna, TN; and two nieces: Susan Fann, McGregor, TX, and Aimee Alexander, Independence, MO; and numerous cousins and friends.
