Virgil L. Amer


Virgil Louis Amer, 98, formerly of Odessa, MO, passed away on October 8, 2021, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg, MO. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday October 12, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at New Life Church in Oak Grove, MO. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until the service time. Burial with military honors will follow the service in the Odessa Cemetery, Odessa, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Missions Department at New Life Church in Oak Grove, or to the First Assembly of God in Lexington, MO.

Virgil was born in Lexington, MO, to Albert and Addie (Barnes) Amer, on March 23, 1923. Virgil served in World War II as a machine gunner in the South Pacific in New Caledonia, New Guinea, the Admiralty Islands, Leyte (Philippines) and Japan with the 1st Calvary Division. He received an honorable discharge in January 1946. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, The Bronze Star with two bronze star devices, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze star devices, American Campaign Medal, Expert Marksmanship Medal for rifle, carbine, and machine gun, World War II Service Medal and Coin-State of Missouri Army Combat Infantry Badge and the Honorable Service Lapel Pin.

Virgil married Daisy Seitz on April 9, 1948, in Wellington, MO, who preceded him in death.  He retired from Lake City Army Ammunition in 1983. After his retirement he spent his time gardening, helping his son in his mowing business, and camping. Virgil was of the Assembly of God faith where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, and also did special speaking.

Virgil was preceded in death by his wife Daisy (Seitz) Amer; his parents; three brothers: George “Bud”, Albert “Beans”, and Ryland “Clifford”; and two sisters, Opal and Helen Jackson.

He is survived by his three children: Shari (Richard) Lee of Hamilton, MO, Debbie (Egial) Hopkins of Bates City, MO, and Eric (Angela) Amer of Blue Springs, MO; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
