Alice H. Shackelford, 96, Oak Grove, former resident of Odessa and rural Bates City, passed away Friday, April 3, 2015, at her home. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday April 7, 2015, at Grace Baptist Church, 600 Maple Lane, Oak Grove, followed by a service at 11:00 a.m. with Rich Cummings officiating. Burial will follow at Bates City Cemetery. Contribution can be made to Grace Baptist Church.
Alice was born in the home on December 16, 1918, the daughter of Edward J. and Keats Armstrong Henning, Bates City, MO. She graduated from Bates City High School in 1938. She was a member of the Bates City Girls’ Basketball Team throughout high school winning the WMC Tournament in 1938. Alice attended beauty school in Kansas City and graduated in 1940. She married Donald W. Shackelford on May 17, 1942. They lived in San Diego, CA and returned to the Bates City area in 1950. Alice worked with Don operating a State Farm agency in Odessa 1956-1968. She later worked at and retired from the Bank of Grain Valley in 1987. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Bates City and was a member of the Grace Baptist Church at the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don in 1997, two brothers Kenneth L. Henning and Edward L Henning, and a sister Opal Louise Anderson. She is survived by three daughters, Karen Frantz, Oak Grove, Vickie Gulley, Versailles, Kem Roberts, Blue Springs; a grandson, Chris Berry, Blue Springs and a granddaughter, Lauren Roberts, Blue Springs; two great grandsons Caleb and Zachary Berry, Blue Springs; and a nephew Greg Anderson, Pleasant Hill.
