Mary Jane “Janie” McSpadden, 87, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at her home in Oak Grove, MO. Services will be Saturday, October 24th at the Oak Grove United Methodist Church; Visitation from 12:00-2:00 p.m.; Funeral service beginning at 2:00 p.m. Private burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the church at P.O. Box 169, Oak Grove, MO 64075.
Janie was born July 30, 1922 in Council Bluffs, IA, the oldest child of John Edward & Margarite Ann (McFerron) McClure. An enthusiastic student, she spent all her grade and high school years in Council Bluffs, and attended Simpson College in Indianola, IA for two years as a young woman.
When WWII broke out, Janie enlisted in the Navy WAVES, serving as a gunnery instructor in San Diego, CA. It was there that she met and married her husband of 64 years, H.B. “Mac” McSpadden on February 16, 1945. Janie is survived by her husband and three children, Connie Decker of Raytown, MO, Bruce McSpadden & his wife Marilyn of Lee’s Summit, MO, and Mary Jan Hearn, also of Lee’s Summit, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Her family was the absolute center and joy of her life.
At the age of 40, Janie returned to school, graduating with a B.A. in Education from CMSU in Warrensburg, MO. A talented and dedicated elementary school teacher, her career was spent in Pacific Junction, IA, and locally in Raytown, Oak Grove, and Grain Valley. She especially loved teaching 6th and 7th graders and they loved her. Janie was active in both professional and civic sororities, Phi Beta Phi and Beta Sigma Phi. She was a member of the Oak Grove United Methodist Church. In retirement Janie remained active, entertaining friends and family, writing for the local newspaper, spending winters in Florida, and volunteering in her church and community. She was vitally interested in life, full of fun and good humor, a lifetime learner, a fabulous cook, a wise counselor, and a warm and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
