James Dennis Costigan, 63, of Oak Grove, MO, passed away Saturday, September 25, 2010 at his home.  Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 29 at the Oak Grove United Methodist Church; burial in Grain Valley Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove, MO.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the National Kidney Foundation, 6405 Metcalf Ave., Ste 204, Overland Park, KS 66202-4086.

Dennis was born on September 6, 1947 in Kansas City, MO, the son of James & Frances (Webb) Costigan.  He graduated from Oak Grove High School in 1965 and CMSU in 1969.  He obtained his Masters Degree in 1974.  Dennis married Connie Doll on January 1, 1980.  He taught Industrial Arts in Kingsville from 1979 to 1995 (approximation) and drove the school bus.  He also had a license to sell real estate.

Dennis owned and operated a cabinet shop from 1982 –1995 in Urich, MO.  He enjoyed using his summers to try new things from building houses, cabinets, to fun things with the kids and grandkids.

He ran for political office in July 1998, for the 54th district state representative.

He was a member of the Lion’s Club, Toastmasters, and the United Methodist Church of Oak Grove.

He enjoyed woodworking, grandkids, and visiting with friends & relatives. He loved hearing and telling jokes and he always knew the punch line before you could tell him.  His favorite thing was making pancakes for anyone in animal shapes, initials, or names:  they were so popular they were news worthy!

Dennis always said “I’m not a tightass, I’m just frugal!”  He was a great supervisor, especially for his brothers.  He loved to argue, just for the sake of arguing.  Stubborn to the very end!  And always 99% correct!

It was amazing that he knew someone everywhere he went, even in Alaska and in Arlington National Cemetery.

Dennis liked to say that he only made one mistake in life, and that was admitting he had made a mistake.

He was preceded in death by his father, James D. Costigan in 1961.

His survivors include his wife of 30 years: Connie Costigan of the home; one son: Micheal J. Costigan (wife Tisha) of Adrian, MO; three daughters:  Mary K. Poole of Crieghton, MO, Julie M. Costigan of Oak Grove, MO, and Angela B. Hicks (husband Bill) of Oak Grove, MO; and you have to remember his extended family: Joe Gilvin, Darren Call, and Leslie Spilman & her family that were “almost” his children; five grandchildren: Wesley Poole, Matt Kepner, Katelyn Hicks, Derrold Costigan, and Sami Costigan; his mother: Frances Costigan Grote of Oak Grove; two sisters: Mary Zink (husband Charles) of Clinton, MO, and Donna Costigan of Kansas City; two brothers: Mike Costigan and J. Pat Costigan (wife Mary Jo), all of Oak Grove; a step-sister: Faye Harms (husband Fred) of Oak Grove; a step-brother: Roy Grote (wife Dinah) of Oak Grove; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
