Shirley J. Dennis, 70, of Bates City, MO, passed away Monday, June 18, 2012 at Centerpoint Medical Center, Independence. Visitation will be 6-8 pm Thursday, June 21, at Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. Funeral will be 10 am Friday at Royer’s. Burial will follow in Bates City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Bates City First Baptist Church or Bates City Cemetery.
Shirley was born February 1, 1942 in Grain Valley, MO, the daughter of Earl & Emily (Smith) Houston. She married Donald E. Dennis on June 12, 1959. She served as the City Clerk of Bates City for 20 years. Shirley was a member & Sunday School teacher at the First Baptist Church of Bates City; and a member & Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star #407. She enjoyed traveling, reading, sewing, embroidering and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son-in-law Doug Gower, and grandson David Gower.
Her survivors include her husband of 53 years, Donald Dennis of the home; two daughters, Carolyn Carlton & husband Terry of Independence and Donna Gower of Oak Grove; three sisters: Andrea Martens of Warsaw, Gail Dennis of Bates City, and Kay Woody of Odessa; six grandchildren: Jason Russell, Mandy Duty, Jaclyn Russell, Daniel Gower, Dennis Gower, & Dillon Gower; and six great-grandchildren: Alexia, Allison, Emily, Gavin, Brice, & Ella.
Shirley was a loving wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She was a friend to all who knew her and she will be lovingly remembered by them all.
