Richard M. (Dick) Lowe

Richard M. (Dick) Lowe passed away at home from natural causes July 14, 2012. He was born August 31, 1926, the son of Richard Hansel Lowe and Kathryn Saunders Lowe and grew up on Main Street in Blue Springs. At 15 he was an Eagle Scout and a brave in the tribe of Mic-O-Say. Dick graduated from high school in 1943 at seventeen and with parents’ consent joined the US Navy. He served on the USS St. Croix as a medic in the Pacific, seeing action during Okinawa and Iwo Jima battles and was in Tokyo Bay the day of the Japanese surrender. Upon discharge from the Navy he enrolled in pharmacy school at Kansas University. In 1948 he married Gertie Morrison from Oak Grove and transferred to Kansas City University (UMKC). After graduation he moved back to Blue Springs to work with his Dad at Lowe Drug Company. Dick was a charter member of Legion Post 499, Downtown Merchant Assn., Blue Springs Country Club, and Blue Springs Jaycees. He was a past commander of the VFW, a member of the Optimist Club, Rotary Club, PGA Hole-In-One Club, and served on the Park Board. After his father’s death, Dick continued managing Lowe Drug until its’ sale in 1980. He continued working as a pharmacist until a stroke in 1995. Dick is survived by wife Gertie, three daughters, Dee Ann Lowe, Dawn Lowe Bury, and Ami Lowe Fogle, son-in-laws Bob Klein and Dean Bury, sister Nancy Lowe Baker, six grandchildren, Chris Lowe DeWalt, Eric Lowe Bury, Kate Lowe DeWalt, Olivia Lowe Bury, Cody Lowe Fogle, and Jake Lowe Fogle, and four great grandchildren. Dick loved his family, community, his country, fishing in Wyoming and having a beer with his friends.
