Bernard D Howell, son of Felix Paul Howell and Waneta Ruth Sims, was born August 27, 1941 in Buckner, Missouri. He grew up in and around Buckner and his family moved to Osceola, Missouri in 1952. He graduated from Osceola High school in May 1959. Bernard “Butch” Howell entered the United States Navy on May 26,1959 and served until August 21, 1962 when he was honorably discharged. Most of his time in the Navy he was based in San Diego, California. After serving, Bernard was employed at the United Postal Service and he eventually retired from that job. He married Janet Carol Morrow on June 16, 1967. Janet preceded him in death on August 14, 1980.
Surviving children of Bernard and Janet are Kim Jo (Howell) Bausch, Tracey Lynn (Howell) Wetzel, and Thomas Michael Howell. Bernard and Janet have 5 surviving grandchildren and 2 surviving great grandchildren. Bernard married Judy Dale Sparks on February 19, 1987. Judy preceded him in death on December 27, 2012.
Bernard was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Kimberly (Erwin) James.
Bernard enjoyed a multitude of outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, and walking/hiking. He lived in Blue Sprints, Missouri independently until his death on July 31, 2025.
