Carl Lewis Gustafson, 88, of Independence, Missouri, passed away August 14, 2017, in his daughter’s home in Blue Springs, MO. Services will be on Wednesday August 23, 2017 at the New Salem Funeral Home in Independence, Missouri. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. and funeral starting at 11 a.m. Burial and military honors will follow at the New Salem Cemetery Independence, Missouri. Contributions can be made in Carl’s Name to Crossroads Hospice.
Carl was born April 14, 1929, in Atchison, KS, the son of Frank T. and Marie J. (Whited) Gustafson. He served in the United States Navy for five years and was honorably discharged in 1953. Carl worked as a driver for the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority for 40 years before retiring in 1992. He would also cut down trees to earn extra money. He enjoyed going hunting and fishing. Carl loved his children, grandchildren and was always there to help friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara D. (Barrington) Gustafson, 2011, and his daughter, Darlene J. Hughson, 2010; three sisters, Elvera Gash, Frances Myers, Darlene Wohler; and a brother, Waldo Gustafson.
Survivors include four children, David Gustafson, Carl (Melody) Gustafson, Mark (Mary) Gustafson, Sharon Hostetler; grandchildren, Nick, Ryan, Alex, Stephen, Heather, Chad, Travis, Haley, Todd and Tara; 15 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
