Charles “Charlie” Richard Barnes, SMSgt USAF: Retired, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2019, from complications related to ALS. A memorial service celebrating Charlie’s life will be held on November 9, 2019 at the Smoke Brewing Co., 209 SE Main St., Lee’s Summit, MO, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Charles Barnes to the ALS Association at www.ALSA.org. A family ceremony is planned at a later time.

Charlie was born on November 28, 1939, in Canton, North Carolina. He graduated from Asheville High School in 1957. He entered the Air Force in 1960 retiring as a Senior Air Traffic Controller in 1980. Following retirement from the Air Force, he continued a long career in aviation. Charlie remained active throughout his life and enjoyed traveling and back packing. He was also an accomplished pilot, sky diver, and scuba diver.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 40 years, Carol Barnes of Lee’s Summit, MO; three daughters: Teri Mathis of Panama City, FL, Lisa Barnes of Panama City, FL, and Kathleen Lowinger (Steven) of North Miami, FL; two stepsons: James Moyer (Nicole) of Avon, OH, and Mark Moyer of Kansas City, MO; five grandchildren: Brittney Mathis, Alexander Kent, Mitchell Kent, Adam Lowinger, and Elaine Lowinger; two great-grandchildren; and Charlie’s half uncle, Wayne Hardison of Roanoke, VA. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lillian (Smith) Barnes of Asheville, NC.
