Dennis Patrick O’Brien Sr. 85, of Independence, Missouri passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2022. A visitation will be held at 12:30 p.m. Funeral Service at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 14, 2022 at Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley, Missouri.

Dennis was born January 6, 1937 in Kansas City, Kansas. Son of William Michael and Hazel Mary (Umberger) O’Brien. He was the youngest of 14 children. Dennis and his wife Shirley were happily married for 38 years. They shared an interest in bingo, playing cards and slots. Dennis was in the United States Army where he met and later married his first wife, Mary (Landry) O’Brien-Savner. They later divorced. Mary passed in 2014. He had an impeccable work ethic. One that included a 22 year career at Edwards Vending, 22 years at Kansas City Kansas Schoolboard and 12 years at Harrah’s. Dad loved to spend time with family, including his and Shirley’s Shih Tzu, Buddy Lee. He also loved fishing and telling stories about fishing, many of which included his brothers, sons, and nephews. During his down time, he always had a puzzle in the works and an old western or football game on the television. He could liven up any party with is quick wit and/or by singing one of his limericks.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Hazel (Umberger) O’Brien;

6 brothers: John, Thomas, James, Robert, Cosmos (Babe), and Eugene; 2 sisters: Catherine Denny and Alice Flannagan

Dennis is survived by his wife, Shirley O’Brien; 5 Children: Hazel (Ron) Hardman, Dennis (Mary Hillebert) O’Brien, Barbara (Randy) Genz, Joseph (JoLynn) O’Brien, Traci (Jeff) McHenry; sister, Mary Lynch; 15 grandchildren: Derryl (Whitney) Belknap Jr., Kelly Belknap, Dennis III (Alaina) O’Brien, Summer (Rodney) Millentree, Steven (Liah) O’Brien, Kristi (Josh) Sheridan, Robert (Gene) Creason, Ashlie O’Brien, Jaimee (Nate) Hill, Danielle (Daniel) Jameson, Autumn O’Brien, Richard Carmack Jr. ( Tiffany), Jesse Ricketts (Allyse), Patrick Carmack (Jessica), and Brandon Carmack (Tiffany); 30 great- grandchildren: Journey Tacker, Cash Tacker, Alex Pappageorge, Tayler Stock, Derryl Belknap III, Hadleigh Belknap, Alexis O’Brien, Mariah O’Brien, Keala Millentree, Marlow Millentree, Lanaya Millentree, Dimetrius Millentree, Bo Whitman O’Brien, Elmo Genz, Ava Sheridan, Gia Sheridan, Ocean Genz, Dominick O’Brien, Jacob Hill, Sophia Hill, Lance Oliver, Rylie Carmack, Kierra  Carmack, Trinity Carmack, Charlotte Carmack, Jacey Ricketts,  Skylar Ricketts,  Juddia McGuire, Graci Carmack, and Brandon Carmack II; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
