Helen E. Lewellen


Helen Elizabeth Lewellen passed away on January 27, 2024, at the age of 66. Helen was born at home in Rayville, Mo. on March 31,1957 to Elwyn Buryl and Emma Verbeadie (James) Griffin. Helen was daddy’s girl and loved helping on the family farm. She attended Polo High School and played the clarinet in the marching band. Helen met her husband, Thomas Glenn Lewellen at Polo High School and they married on May 24, 1975. Tom was in the army, and they lived in numerous places during their early marriage. Once Tom retired from the service, they moved back to Kansas City where Helen worked for Aetna for over 25 years. Helen was a devoted Nana to her grand-daughters and thought they hung the moon.  

Helen is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Wendy and Brent Cook of Corsicana, Tx. and Crystal Lewellen of Independence, Mo.; three granddaughters, Kathryn and Samantha Cook of Corsicana and Bailey Cook of San Antonio, Tx.; one brother and sister-in-law, Buryl and Donna Griffin of Richmond Mo.; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Regina Conner of Independence, Mo., Robin and Bob Hood of Kansas City, Mo., and Mary and Steve Casey of Columbus, Ks.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dale and Winnette Lewellen of Lake Ozark Mo. and Jim and Melody Lewellen of Gladstone, Mo.; lots of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews whom she loved very much. 

Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas; both of her parents; her sister, Doris Miller; brother, William McCleary; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Glenn and Leona Lewellen; three brothers-in-law, Alan, Larry, and David Lewellen; and one sister-in-law, Maria Lewellen. 

Helen lived in Texas for many years until recently moving back to Missouri. She loved spending time with her siblings and was devoted to her daughters. She loved them very much. She was an amazing Nana to her baby girls and loved them “to the moon and back”. Helen was a member of Bethel Church of Polo, Mo. 

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10th at Bethel Church of Polo.  The family suggests donations to Kansas City Hospice House or Bethel Church of Polo, Mo.
