James “Jim” D. Smith, 77, of Independence, Missouri passed away at home on Sunday, January 22, 2023, surrounded by family and friends after a long battle with esophageal cancer. Born June 27, 1945, Jim was a devoted husband to his surviving wife, Debra, for 50 years. He was the proud father of Logan (Heather) and Garrett (Rachel) and the doting grandfather of Camdyn. He is also survived by his loving sister, Darlene (Harry) Carlton of Tennessee as well as, niece Kara, and nephews: Chris, Brent, and Chad. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Helen Smith of Independence, Missouri.
Jim was an easy man to know and love, possessing effortless charm and a welcoming smile. Above all, he enjoyed time with his family and traveling. Jim graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1963, was an Eagle Scout, and served as a decorated member of the US Navy from 1964 – 1968. He went on to receive his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from the University of Missouri–Columbia, which led to a fulfilling career teaching Industrial Technology in the Independence School District from 1974 until his retirement in 2003. He will be greatly missed by all who had the honor of knowing him.
The Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 30, 2023, at Colbern Road Restoration Branch, 9525 Lake Lotawana Rd, Gate 2, Lee’s Summit, MO 64086.

His dedication of time and patience during those years is very appreciated. I’ll always remember Jim as a good and kind man who positively impacted the lives of many children.
