James R. Martin

James “Jimmy” Roy Martin, 86, of Oak Grove, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2024 in his home. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 8th at Royer Funeral Home in Oak Grove. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to Grace Baptist Church.

Jimmy was born to George and Reba (Taylor) Martin on November 11, 1937 at their home in Sweet Springs, Missouri. He attended country school around Boonville, MO. He met his wife Judy Bruce in 1959 and married her August 12, 1961. They lived on a farm in the California, MO, area until 1972 when they moved to Independence, MO, and officially calling Oak Grove home in 1973, where they raised their three boys.

If Jimmy was not giving you trouble, he had not met you yet. His orneriness was known and loved by everyone who knew him. He especially loved to pick on his grandkids and great-grandchildren. If they were around, he would be playing bucking horses, wrestling, or anything else they could play. Papa, as Jimmy was known by them, loved to spoil them with sweet treats. He was always taking his grandchildren to the doughnut shop or to get ice cream if the doughnut shop was not open. Jimmy also shared his love of puzzles with them, gifting his puzzles to many different people. In the last few years of his life, he took to calling his grandkids to check up on them in their many adventures of life, making sure they had a good week and keeping them up to date on Zeze. He made sure they knew he loved them. Jimmy was a proud member of Grace Baptist Church, serving as a Deacon for many years. He was also an active member of the Davis Center, volunteering with Meals on Wheels, and many other activities the center put on.

Jimmy is survived by his wife Judy of the home; sisters, Ann Bellamy and Mary Sue (Donald Rae) Lohse; sister in-law Patty Bruce; his 3 sons, Brian (Patsy) Martin, Todd (Angie) Martin, and Scott Martin; his grandchildren, Tricia (Jeff) Witte, Patrick, Paige, Madelon, Maryeah, Hailey, and Michaela; and great-grandchildren, Madisyn, Grant, and Jillian. He was preceded in death by his parents.

  1. Jim’s smiling face was the first thing we seen on our first day at Grace Baptist Church. He was a greeter, held open the door and thanked us for coming, and gave us a bulletin. He made us feel welcomed each week. Jim always was very friendly and made it a point to acknowledge our presence. He will be dearly missed. He had such a beautiful smile, kindred soul and loving heart. Prayers for the family, David & Alice Haynes
