Janet K. Owings


Janet K. Owings, 69, originally from Oak Grove, Missouri, passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at Villages of Jackson Creek, Independence, Missouri.  A Celebration of Life will be held on August 14th at the Oak Grove Christian Church, 118 SW 22nd Street in Oak Grove, with visitation at 12:00 p.m. followed by the memorial service at 2:30 p.m.  If you wish to remember Janet, please donate in her memory to a memorial scholarship fund being set up for students at Oak Grove High School.  You may send checks to Royer Funeral Home, 101 SE 15th St, Oak Grove, MO 64075 or to Steven Owings at 60 Adams Ln, Rockmart, GA 30153.

Janet was born on March 11, 1952, in Kansas City Missouri, and was chosen to become the new member of Helen and Don Owings’ family.  She spent her childhood on the family farm in Oak Grove and attended Oak Grove Christian Church.  Janet graduated high school in Oak Grove.  She later attended Penn Valley Health Science Institute, receiving her RN in 1992.  Janet retired from the Kansas City Regional Office, Department of Mental Health, Division Developmental Disabilities on March 24, 2017.  She loved her job and was passionate about training and giving providers the tools needed to give good support for their residents.  After retirement, she worked for Royer Funeral Home in Blue Springs, Missouri.

Janet was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church, Oak Grove American Legion Auxiliary, and the Christian Women’s Fellowship, and was Secretary of the Oak Grove All-School Reunion Committee for several years.  Her big love was the Kansas City Chiefs, especially Patrick Mahomes.  You didn’t dare call her during a game unless it was to discuss the latest play.  Janet loved to travel and took lots of trips with friends and traveled with her mom.  Her last trip was to Alaska. She enjoyed visiting with friends over a good meal, Diet Coke, and a game of cards or dominos. 

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Don Owings, and great-nephew, Johnathan.

She is survived by her son, Steven Owings of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Brittany Owings of Independence and Logan Owings of Atlanta; sister, Jane Rhodes (Paul) of Odessa; nieces and nephews: Christina Whitaker (Bill), John Gibson (Jessica), Brianna Gibson (Christian), James Gibson, Evan Whitaker, Collin Whitaker, Maria Whitaker, Liam Gibson, Janessa Gibson, Emma Gibson, and Lydia Gibson; and many friends.

  2. Growing up in Oak Grove everyone knew everybody! The Owing’s family was one of my favorites. My thoughts and much love to her family and friends. She will be missed.

  3. I miss you so much Janet! I wish we could have spent more time together these past few years after you retired, but life just took over. It was a great loss for me when you retired at the Regional Office in Kansas City. You were a great co-worker as well as my dear sweet friend. You would have done anything for me, and you did everything possible! You were always there to listen to all my problems and help me when you could, both at work and in my personal life. I know you are in a much better world now, and I hope it brings peace to your son Steven, your extended family, and friends knowing that Heaven has welcomed you in with open arms! Enjoy yourself up there! Until we meet again!!!

  4. Enjoyed working with Janet during her years at St Mary’s Hospital. She was a wonderful person , dedicated nurse and great fun to be with .

  5. Janet was a great lady, and loved the time i spent with her and her mother when i was pastoring the Oak Grove Church. She will truly be missed!
