Larry W. Jenkins


Larry Wayne Jenkins, Sr., 74, of Independence, Missouri, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 2, 2018.   Memorial services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 8th at New Salem Funeral Home, Independence.  The family will greet friends from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Larry was born September 14, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Glen Richard Jenkins and Opal Marie Bryant.  He attended Northeast High School.  Larry worked at Yellow Freight Systems, retiring after 30 years, and was a proud member of the Teamsters Union Local 41.  He enjoyed football, boxing, MMA, fishing, and vacations.  Larry will be remembered for his love for his family, especially his wife, whom he knew at first sight he would marry.  He also loved coaching and watching his children and grandchildren in their activities.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Glen Jenkins Jr.  His survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mary (Mettlach) Jenkins; three children: Larry Jenkins Jr of Lee’s Summit, MO, Jennifer Redman and husband Martin of Blue Springs, MO, and Melanie Grote and husband Josh of Mound City, KS; eight grandchildren: Casey Redman, Devin Jungmeyer, Caitlynn Elliott, Dalton Burton, Cal Jenkins, Jayden Redman, Gus Grote, and Pyper Grote; two great-grandchildren: Bentley and Beckham Elliott; one brother, Mark Jenkins and his fiancé Dina Hofstetter; and his step-mother, Florence Dameron.
