Lizzie M. Root

Lizzie (Liz) Magdalene Root (93) of Independence, Missouri, went to be with Jesus Thursday, January 27, 2022, with her family by her side. She was born December 26, 1928, at Etterville, Missouri to Orris W and Bonnie M Hoff.

Funeral arrangements are provided by Royer’s New Salem Funeral Home in Independence, Mo. Visitation held Saturday, February 5 from 11:30-12:30 with the funeral service at 12:30 pm. Interment at Salem Cemetery. The Reverend Charles Ellsworth to officiate services.

Liz had 14 siblings: Orris W Jr, Bonnie Jane, Joan Josephine, James Robert, Virginia Louise, George William, Daniel Edward, Maymie Jean, Lydia June, Harold Dale, Janet Lee, Luther Roland, and two half-sisters, Jewel and Ira Leona.  She was known to them as Mag, a nickname given by Grandma Stickney. Liz married Ercil E Sooter and they had three children: Gary Ercil, Marjorie Mae, and Francis Kay.  After Liz and Ercil’s marriage ended, Liz married Robert L Root and they had one daughter, Patricia Louise. Robert took Liz’s previous children and raised them as his own. During her younger years, Liz worked at Glaser Brothers garment factory in Eldon, Missouri making 40 cents per hour and later moved to the Kansas City area where she worked at Stuart Hall Stationery. At one time she was a Home Interiors representative and enjoyed helping women pick out décor for their homes.  She was able to retire at an early age and enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Liz was handy with a sewing machine and made 50-60 quilts which she passed to her daughters. She loved crocheting dollies, working puzzles on the computer, and scanning Facebook. She was pretty computer savvy for a 93-year-old. One of her favorite past-time was watching old westerns. Liz gave her heart to Christ early in life and reaped the blessing of seeing her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren live and serve Christ as well. She was thankful that God blessed her life with such a wonderful family and encouraged each to live for God every day of their life and to be ready for His call from this earth. When she was physically unable to attend church, she enjoyed watching televised church services.

Liz leaves behind her husband, Robert L Root of 59 years; three daughters, Marjorie (Scott) Garner of Republic, MO, Francis (Ray) Irwin of Harrisonville, MO, and Patricia Bonilla of Independence, MO. Eight grandchildren: Sondra (Robert) Peck, Sarah (John) Ivaska, Susan (Charles) Ellsworth, Matthew (Cassandra) Irwin, Christopher (Joyce) Irwin, Frank Irwin, Jasmine Bonilla, and Jeffrey Bonilla.
