Richard “Dick” E. Sanderson of Odessa, Missouri, aged 84, passed from this life on April 18, 2024. Born on November 4, 1939, in Independence, Missouri, to Ella Lucille (Davis) and Roy E Sanderson, he was a son of the local soil and a lifelong servant to the community that he cherished.
Educated at Rock Creek Elementary and a graduate of Central High School in Kansas City, Dick Sanderson committed himself early to the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout in February of 1957—a testament to his dedication to the values of honor, courage, and service. He remained actively involved in the Boy Scouts for an impressive 75 years, guiding countless youth to become better men in their communities.
Answering the call of duty, Dick honorably served as Military Police at Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, Georgia, and journeyed to the stark expanses of Greenland with his unit. His service extended beyond security; he graced the base with his artistic flair, leaving behind murals and hand-carved signs as his legacy. Upon his return to civilian life in Kansas City, his unwavering commitment to the Boy Scouts saw him bestowed with honors such as the District Award of Merit and the esteemed Silver Beaver Award. As a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say, he rose to the task of Keeper of the Wampum and was known by his Tribal name of KOW Twin Crows.
Richard was a member of Buckner Lodge, #501 in Buckner as a Master Mason and had been awarded the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter award. He took pride in associating with other Masons in their support of youth and community.
In his professional life, Dick was a skilled Tool and Die Machinist at Armco Steel, and upon retirement, he continued to serve the community. His passion for Scouting led him to roles such as Ranger at Camp Arrowhead (MO) and Camp Wolfeboro (CA), where his wisdom and leadership shaped many a young life. His later years were spent offering his expertise at Home Depot, working with the youth at Hilltop Treatment Facility, and penning articles and his book ‘A Trail of Memories in Scouting’ that shared his enduring love for Scouting.
Dick’s personal quest led him to walk the path of Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts. With his wife Cathy, he traveled to London and Africa, fostering international brotherhood and earning the International Scouter Award for his efforts.
A respected and active member of Faith United Methodist Church in Grain Valley, Missouri, Dick’s interests spanned woodworking, art, singing, camping, fishing and photography. Ever generous, he was a friend to all and a stranger to none.
