February 9, 2008 – May 11, 2024
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of William Lafayette “BooBoo” Sides, our cherished first son, who left us on May 11, 2024, at the tender age of 16.
Born on February 9, 2008, William was named after his beloved maternal grandfather, carrying forward the esteemed Lafayette name from eight generations on his father’s side. A young man of deep thought and broad knowledge, William aspired to join the Naval Academy, inspired by his father’s distinguished service in the Navy.
William was not only a passionate video game enthusiast but also an avid swimmer who loved every moment with his buddies on the swim team. His vast knowledge on a variety of subjects reflected his attentive and inquisitive nature, endearing him to all who knew him. William was a sensitive boy who deeply loved his mother. His compassion and empathy were boundless, and it would sadden and anger him to see the pain his departure has caused. His mother cherished every moment with him, especially their belly laughs and the dragon stories they would tell at bedtime. These memories will forever resonate with warmth and love. From an early age, William and his sister Harper shared an extraordinary bond. One cherished memory involved building sandcastles at Virginia Beach. When someone ruined their creation and broke William’s toy, six-year-old Harper stood up for him, marking a moment William later recalled as the beginning of their great friendship. Recently, on a vacation in Florida, he shared how that day made him realize just how proud he was to have Harper as his sister. His younger brother will hold dear the countless times they laughed and smiled until it hurt, including their shark fishing adventures. These treasured moments, filled with joy and laughter, will forever be cherished and held close to our hearts. Alongside their cousin, the “Boys only” Gentlemen’s meals and get-togethers were also a source of fun, maturity, and insight; though they could be rude and vulgar, they were always civilized and well-mannered.
The sudden loss of William is a profound tragedy not only to his family but also to his friends and those who did not have the fortune to meet him and witness the incredible person he was destined to become. We mourn the future that could have been and celebrate the indelible impact he made in his short time with us.
A memorial service will be held to honor William’s life; details will be shared with family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jed Foundation, supporting mental health and suicide prevention for young adults.
As we grieve, we are comforted by the memory of William’s bright spirit and the profound love he shared with all around him. May his soul find peace and fair winds on his journey beyond.
