William G. Lackey

It is with deep love and gratitude that we celebrate the life of William “Bill” Gerald Lackey of Grain Valley, MO, who went to be with the Lord on August 4, 2024, at the age of 81.

William “Bill” Gerald Lackey was born on December 4, 1942, in Kansas City, MO, to William and Oleta Lackey. He attended Southeast High School and went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps from 1960 to 1964, where he worked as a jet engine mechanic. After his service, he worked for Fort Lauderdale Airline in Florida. Bill also spent a short time in the Army National Guard as a Military Police officer and later attained his degree in paralegal studies.

Bill was a dedicated member of the Jackson County Sheriff Mounted Posse Division, where he enjoyed helping handicapped children and participating in parades with his beloved horse, Coco. He lived a life full of diverse activities, including heading the maintenance at Sheffield Family Life Center, home construction, home repair, and fire restoration for State Farm.

Even in retirement, Bill never slowed down. He worked as a greeter at Home Depot, where he was proud to receive several awards for outstanding work.

Bill was a devoted son, husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, and great-grandfather who cherished spending time with his family. He loved the Lord, his church, New Hope Baptist Church, and his pastor, Dr. Darren Michael Tharp. Bill had a passion for learning about his family legacy and working with his hands. He rededicated his life to Jesus Christ in 2016 and loved reading his Bible. If you ever needed help and Bill was able, he’d be there. He was always willing to lend a hand, especially with his grandkids. Bill loved receiving cards from the family and kept each one.

William “Bill” Gerald Lackey is survived by his wife, Charlotte Lackey; his sister, Sondra Odekirk; his children, Cheryl Corey, Dana Scales, and stepson Stephen Brown; his grandchildren, Jacob Brown, Ashley Nunez, Cassandra Brown, and Caleb Brown; and his great-grandchildren, Sadie Nunez, Kalli Nunez, Kaiden Nunez, Madison Brown, and Isabella Brown. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Oleta Lackey, and his sister, Deanna Hamel.

A funeral service will be held on August 10, 2024, at New Hope Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:00 PM, with the service starting at 1:00 PM. The family welcomes flowers, or in lieu of flowers, requests that donations be made to the New Hope Baptist Church Children’s Ministry in Bill’s memory.
