Bessie Powers, 93, of Independence, Missouri passed away Friday, May 9, 2025 at her home.  A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2025 at Royer’s New Salem Funeral Home, Independence, Missouri; burial to follow at New Salem Cemetery, Independence, Missouri.

Bessie was born on January 30, 1932 in McClelland, Arkansas to Walter and Ollie (Wiggs) Hollis. Bessie had a deep love for the outdoors and spent countless joyful hours tending to her yard. Her connection to nature extended to animals, whom she adored and supported throughout her life.  She was a faithful contributor to several animal charities. 

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Alvie Powers; her parents; one brother, Billy Joe Hollis; and two sisters: Thelma Head and Ruby Chandler.

Bessie is survived by her son, Michael Powers; granddaughter, Brandy Riggs; great-granddaughter, Tessa Riggs; sister, Pat Hammons; nephew, Ricky Hammons and her beloved parrot, Charlie.
