Melanie Jo Wolfington passed away on September 4, 2025, in Kansas City, Kansas, surrounded by family and friends. She was 42.
Born in Topeka, Kansas, on May 31, 1983, Melanie was many things: an accident-prone kid, a nacho connoisseur, a cool mom, a collector of sunglasses, a walking rolodex of one-liners from her favorite movies and shows, a fearless roller coaster rider, a die-hard Chiefs fan, and the life of the party.
Melanie grew up in Topeka, where she spent much of her childhood chasing after her big brother and sister, eager to join in and wishing she were just a little older. She was active in choir, band, 4-H, soccer, and photography.
After high school, her career path was anything but ordinary. She attended Kansas State University and became a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. After three semesters, she switched gears, earned her cosmetology license, and began her career as a hair stylist. One of her favorite jobs was doing the Chiefs cheerleaders hair at Arrowhead Stadium on game days. Later, she returned to school and earned two bachelor’s degrees – in business and management – from the University of Phoenix.
She eventually found her way into commercial real estate, a path that later led to sales positions at workspace solution companies. Along the way, she found joy and connection through two communities that meant the world to her: Jen’s Get Fit Group and Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW KC). Her drive to live life fully made her an inspiration to women in both networks.
Melanie loved being a mom. She and Danny Rosales have two daughters, Ruby and Violet. Ruby was the first grandchild on both sides of the family – a point of great pride for Melanie. She taught her girls to love her favorite holiday, Halloween; the pure joy of a kitchen dance party; and that everyday moments can be joyful performances, especially if you keep makeshift microphones in the console of your car. Her influence on her girls is undeniable – within them live her curiosity, ambition, playful spirit, and unmistakable style.
In 2020, she was diagnosed with osteo sarcoma (bone cancer). Her battle included numerous rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, surgeries, and participation in a clinical trial at M.D. Anderson in Houston. While Melanie didn’t want cancer to define her, it certainly drove her to check items off her bucket list. To name just a few: skydiving with her sister, purchasing a Versace dress (which she named Vivian), jumping off the Stratosphere in Las Vegas, and taking her daughters on a Disney Cruise.
Even during the hardest moments, her humor never faded. After losing her hair from chemo and tiring of all the wigs and caps, she walked into Violet’s daycare with a shiny bald head. When a young boy asked what happened to her hair, Melanie simply said, “I didn’t eat my vegetables.”
Melanie is deeply missed by her daughters, Ruby and Violet Rosales of Manhattan, KS; her parents, Kerry and Mary Wolfington of Lawrence, KS; her brother, Jeffrey (Amber) Wolfington, Torrington, WY; and her sister, Kathryn (Cory) Harth of Manhattan, KS. She also leaves behind beloved aunts and uncles – Dennis and Betty Williams, Daniel and Eileen Wolfington, and Steve Wolfington; cousins Rachelle Williams, Ben Williams, and Michelle Volkart; four nieces and a nephew; four second cousins, and the extended Rosales family.
Melanie requested that her ashes be combined with those of her beloved dog, Riley, and scattered in fabulous places around the world.
A celebration of life is being planned, and details will be shared via her social media. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to cancer research, your local animal shelter, or whatever feels right in honoring her spirit.
