Shirley L. Backhus


Shirley Lena Backhus, “Our Little Luckenbaugh”, 88, passed away peacefully at her home on February 23, 2026.

Shirley was born March 15, 1937 in Kansas City, MO. and she was raised on a farm outside of Liberty, MO. Her young life was filled with the influence of strong women, her family lived a simple life and they often struggled. She would tell stories of potato soup with no meat and greens from the yard. As well as horse drawn rides to school, long after others had gotten cars. Her upbringing developed a strong sense of faith and focus on the important aspects of life. 

She graduated from Liberty High School in 1954 and six years later she met a handsome man named Arthur Backhus. They knew each other about 2 weeks, before deciding to marry on June 29th, 1960.  

Shirley was dedicated and baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on October 29, 1965.  

Shirley and Art ended up with 7 children. Tina was born in 1961, then Erich, Mike, Bobby, Cheryl, Seglenda, then Calvin in 1980. They lived several places before settling in Lathrop, MO. In the 30 years they lived there, Shirley had many jobs, owned several businesses, and was very active with the Kingdom Hall. In 2006, they retired down to the Lake of the Ozarks. Shirley made strong bonds with people throughout her life, having a large circle of very dear friends. 

Shirley and Art moved to Sugar Creek in 2014, to be closer to their children. Shirley loved all of her children, and was happy to be close to them. She and Art shared a life of love at first sight and were married 58 years before Art’s passing. 

Shirley was a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend. Her presence will be greatly missed. She is survived by all of her children: Christina Backhus (Arthur), Erich Backhus, Michael Backhus, Bobby Backhus (Jenny), Cheryl Backhus, Calvin Backhus (Liz). Eleven grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4pm, Saturday March 21st at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses- 500 S. Lee’s Summit Rd. Independence, MO.
