Lawrence Shipman


Lawrence “Larry” Shipman, 71, of Independence, MO, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2019.  Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 25th at Royer’s New Salem Funeral Home, Independence, MO. In respect of Larry, please come in casual clothing.

 Lawrence “Larry” D. Shipman, retired Physical Security Specialist, Federal Protective Service, Region 6, retired with almost 28 years of Federal service with the Federal Protective Service, where he diligently served Region 6 first as a Dispatcher and then as a Physical Security Specialist, Senior Firearms Instructor and Union Steward for AFGE Local 918.  Throughout his FPS career, which began in September of 1989, Mr. Shipman deployed to many incidents of National significance, providing support to Wichita, Kansas after Timothy McVeigh was jailed there, to Miami, Florida for the Elian Gonzales mission, to New York City multiple times after the first World Trade Center trials and 9/11, and also to support to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. 

In addition to his service with the Federal Protective Service, Mr. Shipman served in the US Navy for four years in Reconnaissance Heavy Attack Squadrons 3, 7, and 12, and as a Combat Aircrewman   Bombardier/Navigator for two tours of Viet Nam. He then spent 10 years on the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, and afterwards served a further eight years in the US Army in the Intelligence and Security Command, 2nd Infantry Division, and 1st Infantry Division as Military Police, Platoon Sgt., and Military Police Investigator.  Additionally, he served with the Missouri Air National Guard for two years as a Military Police Investigator.  Larry is listed as a founding member of the US Department of Homeland Security, being a part of one of the 22 original agencies transferred to the department in March 2003.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph & Doris Shipman, and son, Russell DeMaria.

He is survived by his wife, Denise of the home; two daughters: Jamie Wooten & husband Richard of Lone Jack, MO, and Christina Alexander of Pasadena, TX; eight grandchildren: Alyssa, Riley, Jenna, Paige, Lexie, Anya, Kaya, and Jack; and sister, Joyce Shipman of Durham, NC.
