
Mahlon Lee Sommerer, 87, of Oak Grove, Missouri, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2020. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 12th at Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Beacon of Hope Hospice.
Mahlon was born December 30, 1932, in Jefferson City, MO, the son of Adolph and Teresa (Earhardt) Sommerer. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean War. Mahlon retired from United Telephone after 40 years of service. He enjoyed square dancing and was a member of the Swinging Squares Dance Club for 25 years. He received the “Volunteer of the Year” award from the Missouri Nursing Home Association and volunteered for over 10 years after his retirement.
Mahlon was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings: Elizabeth, Lillian, Bud, and Felix.
His survivors include his wife of 47 years, Marylynn Sommerer; son, Pete & Judy Sommerer and their children: Micky & Tammy Sommerer, Derek & Maxine Sommerer, Alicia & Shorty Carpenter, Michael & Lizette Gilmore, Lori & Dan Bathe, and Justin & Amanda Clutter; daughter, Debbie Hauser and her children: Kristen & Brad Wehner, and Melissa & Chris Ducos; son, Glen & Becky Cary and their son, Glen David & Randee Cary; son, Jim & Sherri Sommerer and their children: Andrew & Martha Sommerer, Courtney & Drew Irvine, Penny & Nathan Watson, Lisa & Randon Leathers, and John Green; son, Jerry & Mary Edwards and their children: Anthony Barker, Brooke Barker, and Alexis Barker; and daughter, Samantha Edwards and her children: Joshua Peterson and William Edwards. Mahlon had over five generations of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, totaling more than 85. He was also survived by seven siblings: Marjorie, Vernon, Beatrice, Cleopha, Lolly, Naomi, and Lloyd.
