Bernadette Doyle Torpey, 82, of Liberty, Missouri, died on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:15 am on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at Our Lady of Mercy, 2115 Maturana Dr., Liberty, Missouri with Father Branson presiding.
Bernadette was born on February 10, 1941, in Dublin, Ireland to Edward and Ellen Doyle. Bernadette came to Westport, Connecticut to work as a nanny in 1963. While walking home from the grocery store, passing a pub, she dropped her grocery sack and her future husband, George Torpey, rushed out from the pub to assist her. Shortly after that, they were married and Bernadette worked hard to become a United States citizen. They were married for almost 56 years when he passed away in 2020.
Bernadette never lost her love of the homeland, often inviting her family for extended stays in Connecticut, especially Margaret, Gamie, Annie, Jim, and Rosey. One of her great loves was baking for the neighborhood kids and selling her famous lemon meringue pies. She was a spotless housekeeper with crooner Perry Como blasting in the background.
Bernadette was a very devout, practicing Catholic, praying the Rosary multiple times a day for everyone she knew. After moving to Independence in 1996, her greatest love was caring for her grandchildren. Late in life she still traveled back to Ireland spending some of her last summers with her nieces and nephews creating wonderful memories.
Bernadette is survived by two sons, Edward (Patty) Torpey of Independence, Missouri and Noel (Julie) Torpey also of Independence, five grandchildren, Grace, Talia, Hayden, Dawson, and P.J. one great grandchild, Elena, and many nieces and nephews in Ireland who were always close to her heart.
Bernadette was preceded in death by her husband, George, her son, Paul, her siblings, Coxy, Margaret, John, Bridie, Chrissy and Christy.
Bernadette will be very sorely missed. Memorials may be directed to the family.
