Dennis Scott told his last inappropriate joke on March 13, 2023, after a decade-long battle with congestive heart failure and COPD. He had the all the lives of a cat and cheated death several times over, usually riding off into the sunset blasting his favorite songs with a middle finger in the air- He had everyone believing that he was invincible and would outlive us all purely out of spite. Although he is no longer suffering, he leaves behind his family and friends who are not only relieved, but extremely pissed. We all loved him furiously and are heartbroken at the thought that we have to wait to see him again. We will be gathering for his memorial service on Wednesday, March 22nd at Royer Funeral Home in Oak Grove, Missouri, with visitation from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. and a ceremony to follow.
Den was born swinging into this world October 29, 1963, to Clyde J. Scott and Teresa G. (Scott) Carpenter. The youngest of five, you would think that Den would have a better time listening to directions – however, he spent his entire life challenging every form of authority (except for his own, of course). This precedent of pushing the envelope of life followed him into his short stint in the United States Navy, who also could not control him in the slightest. They released him back into the unsuspecting civilian population without so much as a warning, where he continued to raise hell henceforth.
Den, a Kansas City native, spent his formative years wreaking havoc across the metro with his best friends (or partners in crime, depending on the day). He was known for his legendary ability to turn every situation into a party or a show-down, but always managed to have a great story to tell at the end. To summarize Den’s personality; he never knew a stranger. He also never knew a button he couldn’t push, a line he couldn’t cross, and a gathering that he couldn’t turn into the social event of the year. Den had an uncanny ability to both piss you off and charm you into going along with his shenanigans in the same breath.
Den was preceded in death by his parents, who lived surprisingly long and healthy lives despite having such “challenging” (I mean exciting and interesting) children. Den is also sadly preceded in death by his rascal of an older brother, Douglas “Scotty” Scott. Sorry God, we tried. They are your problem now – and now that they are together, they are damn near unstoppable.
Den leaves behind an incredible pile of stuff as well as two children, who he was incredibly proud of the fact that they both definitely inherited his stubborn attitude and aptitude for doing whatever they want to. Madi (husband, Alec) Taylor of Ottawa, KS, and Nash (girlfriend, Christina) Scott of Norfolk, VA, who were the product of his singular marriage to his ex-wife Marcie (Mundorf) Scott who managed to put up with his antics for many years before even marrying him, which lasted another twelve years. After divorcing, they continued to love and support each other (separately!) until Den’s passing.
Marcie’s family loved Den like one of their own and continued to love him for the rest of his life and beyond. Among her family, he leaves behind his mother-in-law, Regina (husband, Jerry) Doxey of Omaha, NE, and father-in-law, Steve (wife, Paula) Mundorf of Atlantic, IA. He also leaves behind brothers Mitch (wife, Leah) Mundorf and Matt Bjorn, and their children who he loved as his own nephews.
Den’s legacy includes an army of family members that will miss him for the rest of their lives. Den leaves behind his beloved older siblings: brothers – George (wife, Jerri) Scott of Bates City, MO, Don Scott of Jacksonville, NC, and his sister, Kathy (Scott) Longmire of Smithville, MO. And allllll of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who he loved as much as his own children.
Sometimes there aren’t enough words to describe how desperately you will miss an individual person, but I think that this at least gets our point across. We love you, Den. This isn’t goodbye, it’s just see ya later.

13 May 2023Dennie could always make me laugh and was always fun to be around. So many memories and so many good times, and what a character. Once, while we were living in Bucyrus, Dennie, and a friend came down from Colorado to visit, and when he was about 8 miles from our home, his transmission went out, and he only had reverse. That didn’t stop him. I heard a car and looked out the window and saw someone backing up our driveway, and it was Dennie. He drove 8 miles in reverse to get to our house, and it was dark out too! You just never knew what he’d do next, but he had a heart of gold, and no matter how upset or depressed I was, he could always make me feel better. Like I said so many memories and so many good times. I miss him dearly, but I will never forget him. To all his family, I am so sorry for your loss.
