Donald Cassell South

Independence, Missouri

Donald “Don” Cassell South died Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at his home after a courageous battle with Progressive Supra-nuclear Palsy. He was 83. Born in Dante, Virginia, Don was the son of James L. South and Bertha Cassell South. He graduated from Pound High School, Pound, Virginia and then served in the United States Air Force where he was stationed in Abilene, Texas and for a time in Guam. After his military service he was employed by Western Union and Sperry Univac/Unisys in computer installation and maintenance.

Don enjoyed fishing, working on cars, coaching little league, was the king of fixing anything and telling jokes. He was a Christian, Baptist denomination.

Don was a loving husband, married to his wife Georgia for 64 years. He was also a loving father to two sons Jeff and James and a daughter Tammy, who died in her infancy.

Surviving in addition to his wife and sons are his granddaughters Hannah (Ben) and Julie; grandson Andy (Rachel) and great grandsons Lincoln, Jackson and Carson, Brock and Brody and great granddaughter Adelaide. Also surviving is Don’s twin brother David South (Martha) and sisters Jean and Kitty. Sisters-in law Eunice, Geraldine (Robert), and Anna (Buddy).

He was preceded in death by siblings: Kathleen, Virginia, Hazel, Billie, Betty, Jim, Pat, Mary Anne, Jack, and Carolyn.

With Covid concerns a private family service was held September 13, 2021, at Royer Funeral home in Oak Grove, Missouri. His remains will be buried at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, Missouri at a later date. Don will be forever missed and always in our hearts.

Forty years later, Don’s passing brings back memories of my fond times with the South family: the gift of 4 TVs from Don in our Westport apartment; all night fixing Doris Masetti’s VW bug in your garage; the steak feast for the ’80 Super Bowl; and, of course, dominoes until the wee hours (“Put the coffee on, woman!”). Georgia, Jeff and James, I wish you peace and solace with your memories. Don’s soul and your comfort will dwell in my prayers.
