Gloria Oliver, 92, of Oak Grove, Missouri, passed away December 14, 2015 at Oak Grove Nursing and Rehab. Graveside services were held Thursday, December 17, 2015 at Sni Mills Cemetery, Oak Grove, Missouri.
Gloria was born August 23, 1923 in Bates City, Missouri, the first born of Curtis & Opal Groom. She went on to graduate from Bates City High School and Central Missouri State College. Upon graduation, Gloria married Wayne Oliver in 1944. She started teaching in the Oak Grove School System and retired in 1980, where she taught many grades in the elementary school. Returning to CMSU in the 1970’s, Gloria received her Master’s degree in counseling and finished her career as high school guidance counselor. In her spare time, she was an accomplished artist and seamstress. She once entered a handmade quilt in the Missouri state fair and won first place. Gloria also enjoyed painting and her work can be seen gracing the walls of many family and friend’s homes. Over the years, the family was always involved with horses from Shetland Ponies to Belgian draft horses. Gloria spent many hours braiding manes and tales, sewing costumes or showing horses. Gloria always found time to go bowling and she continued to average in the 160’s well into her 80’s.
Gloria was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years; her mother and father; a brother, GD Groom; and a sister, Phyllis Sanders. She is survived by her son and daughter-in law, Jerry and Linda Oliver; granddaughter, Pam and Eric Pederson; great-granddaughter, Jordan and Dustin Casselman; and two great great-grandchildren, all of Oak Grove.
