Jonathan P. Sloan

Jonathan Paul Sloan, 47, of Blue Springs, Missouri passed away on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at home after a brave battle against colon cancer. A Celebration of Life service will be held for Jonathan on Saturday, November 6 at Blue Springs Christian Church (7920 MO-South 7, Blue Springs, MO 64014). Visitation will be held from 9:30-11 AM, with the Celebration of Life service immediately following at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children’s Mercy Sickle Cell Clinic or to a fund that has been set up for the ongoing care of his boys. Contributions to the boy’s fund can be made to his sister, Nichole Williams.

Jonathan was born August 23, 1974 to Sherry (Magel) and Roy Sloan in Independence, MO. After graduating from Truman High School in 1992, he went on to study Psychology at Southwest Baptist University.  He then got his Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology at Webster University. After graduation, he started his first job as a caretaker at the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home.  He moved into a more technical role at Sprint, then he later began working as a Technical Project Manager at Cerner, where he stayed for 13 years until he medically retired. In 1996, he met Jana Caywood while working at the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home, and they wed in 1997.  Jonathan and Jana were foster parents and were placed with 2 wonderful boys in 2003. In 2005, they were officially able to adopt their boys, Christopher & Christian. Jonathan was loved by many, each with their own name, Jon, Jon Paul, JP, Sloan, Sloanie, Pingo & Bub.  He loved his family, friends, his dogs, his Chiefs, his games (video & board games), his computers and his cars!  He loved watching movies and listened to many different styles of music.   One of his other passions was going on cruises (of course, the Alaskan cruise was his favorite because it was arctic cold)!  Truly, his most important passion was his faith in Jesus Christ!

Jonathan was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, John R. Shelton; uncle, John R. Shelton, Jr.; and other family members, cousin Cory; grandparents, Grandma Grace, Grandma Caywood, Doloros & Bill McCray (Papa & Dodo).

Jonathan is survived by his wife, Jana Caywood Sloan; sons, Christopher & Christian Sloan; mother, Sherry Magel of Independence; grandmother, Betty Shelton of Independence; sister, Nichole (Brad) Williams of Lee’s Summit; aunts, Judy (Roger) Moorman of Windsor, CO, Terry Shelton of San Diego, CA; uncle, Robert (Sandy) Shelton of Plattsburg; parents, Roy & Roxanne Sloan of Independence; step-siblings, Dana (Gary) of Lee’s Summit, Adam (Debbie) of Jefferson City and Alex (Mel) of Independence; in-laws, Gary & Melanie Caywood of Blue Springs, Andrea (Scott) Dettmer of Ft. Worth, TX, and Joe (Michaela) Caywood of Los Angeles, CA, as well as many nieces, nephews, other family, and friends that were also considered family.
