Marjorie A. Barnhill

Marjorie “Margie” Anne Barnhill, 72, of Independence, Missouri, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2018 with her loving husband by her side.  Her final days were spent surrounded by her loving friends and family.  A visitation will be held from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 19th at the Petersohn home, followed by a celebration of life ceremony.  For further information, please contact Marti at 816-423-3053, Trey at 816-935-2976, or Makayla at 816-682-5909.  Should friends desire, contributions can be sent to Janice Benjamin with Endowment Comfort cart fund #40668 at 913-588-1435.

Marjorie was born on February 6, 1946 in rural Leroy, Kansas, the daughter of Jay Debs & Roberta Iris (Cunning) Mentzer. She was a graduate of Burlington High School in 1964, and Emporia State Teachers College in 1968; she went on to teach high school history for two years, before marrying her husband. After her 1970 marriage to the love of her life Wayne, which she arrived late to, she became a stay-at-home mom to raise their family. Wayne worked very hard every day to make that possible.  She very rarely missed a sporting or school event, for her children and grandchildren. She was a PTA room mom, baseball mom, and softball mom to many.  She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, watching westerns, bargain hunting with her daughters, unexpected family dinner nights (especially chicken and noodles), and watching Royals games (if the DVRed game was one they had won).  She was our Google before Google existed, remembering birthdays, life events, and various other key dates. If we couldn’t remember, we would call Mom, before checking the internet.  She enjoyed family dinners and holiday get-togethers, which often included homemade ice cream.  It was not uncommon for her kids, or grand-kids, to stop by the house often.  She truly loved the fact that all of her children and grandchildren lived in such close proximity to her.  She never passed up the opportunity to be festive during the holidays by decorating her house inside and out.  Her house was a “must stop” for trick-or-treaters on Halloween and a neighborhood attraction during the Christmas season. Dad will miss her dirty glares, and we will miss so many of her funny quirks. She was an amazing wife, mother, sister, aunt, godmother, grandmother, and friend.  She will be missed by all.

Marjorie is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Wayne Barnhill Jr; her three children, Marti Frye (husband Shane), Wayne III “Trey” (wife Amanda), Makayla Petersohn (husband Logan); her four grandchildren, Dustin Frye (wife Alyssa), Danielle Frye, Lana, and Myla Barnhill; and one great-grandson, Sawyer Wayne Frye, all of Independence.  Sister, Helen Beavers (Warren), brother, Marvin Mentzer; best friends Ralph and Shari Housman, their three children, Lisa, Trish, and Greg (godson); numerous nieces and nephews, and her beloved dogs, Murphy, Lexi, Mia, Izzy, and Chloe.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Jay and Roberta Mentzer (Cunning), brother Willis Jay, and sister Elaine Sowder.

Our family would like to extend our appreciation to the staff at KU Medical Center for their love and kindness to our family in our mom’s final days.
