Nina L. Wright

Nina Lou (Hughes) Wright, 92 of Lee’s Summit, Missouri passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at Bickford of Overland Park in Overland Park, KS.  Graveside Services will be held for the family only at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO later in November.

Nina was born September 10, 1929 to Brandt and Amanda Hughes in Little Rock, Arkansas.  They moved to a small town south of there, Beirne, when she was around 1 year old and lived there til she was in high school when they moved to the nearby town of Gurdon.  She graduated from high school and soon after moved back to Little Rock, where her sister Mary had gotten her a job at the State Welfare Department.  She met her husband Bob in 1950 and they were married towards the end of that year.  Bob was in the Air National Guard and his unit was called up in late 1951.  He and Nina were stationed at various bases throughout the US through 1953 and then they moved to Michigan for a few years and back to Arkansas for a few years, before settling in Overland Park, KS in 1959.

Nina had many different jobs throughout her children’s growing up years, including telephone operator, secretary at an insurance company, doing upholstery at home, selling real estate and working at the post office as a mail sorter.  She was a great seamstress and made a lot of the children’s clothes and square dance outfits for her and Bob, among other things.  She was very crafty and always had some project going.  She was also an avid gardener and always had flowers growing at every place they lived.  Nina was a Girl Scout leader for her daughter’s troop for several years as well.

The family enjoyed camping, boating and fishing on various lakes in MO throughout the children’s growing up years. Bob & Nina were avid square dancers beginning in the 1970’s and into their retirement years.  They traveled around the country in an RV for many years, finally settling in south Texas in the winters and several years ago moved to MO to be near family.

Nina was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her parents and her brother John Hughes.

She is survived by her children Teresa (Jim) Leacock and Tom (Dawn) Wright, grandchildren: Christy (Tim) Berry, Andrew Leacock, Rachel (John) Junio and Rob (Molly) Wright and great-grandchildren:  Galena, Caleb, Luke, Ila Kate, Jackie and Millie.   She is also survived by her sister Mary Smead, her sister-in-law Evelyn Hughes, two special nieces, Susan Fulmer and Cathy Webb, and several other nieces and nephews.
