Philip E. Sandage

Philip Eugene Sandage, a beloved pillar of strength and love, passed away on January 4, 2024, in Kansas City, Missouri, coincidentally marking his 78th birthday. Born in 1946 to Doris and Jesse Sandage (deceased), Philip’s life was a rich blend of accomplishment, warmth, and devotion. He was raised in Jackson County, Missouri, reflecting the spirit of Independence and Blue Springs throughout his life.

Philip pursued a passion for learning and problem-solving, earning degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kansas (BS) and the University of Missouri-Columbia (MS). His 45-year career in the engineering field was highlighted by significant contributions to firms like Sega, Inc., and Burns & McDonnell. Known for his love for math, science, and understanding the world’s complexities, Philip’s work left a lasting impact.

Family was the cornerstone of Philip’s life. He was a devoted husband to Lise-Merete Sandage (née Knudsen), sharing 54 years of loving marriage. He was also a beloved brother to Janice Finch (deceased) and Marjorie Farren (John Farren). His influence endures through his children, Kimberly Sandage Gipson (John Gipson) and Paul Einar Sandage (Dhurata Ikonomi), and his cherished grandchildren, Philip Einar and Ana Elvira Ikonomi-Sandage.

Philip’s commitment to service and community was evident through his lifelong involvement with the Boy Scouts, from being an Eagle Scout in his youth to a leader in adulthood. His hobbies included fishing and travel, journeying from the lakes of Minnesota to the fjords of Norway and visiting family across Norway, Canada, and the U.S. His sharp intellect, honesty, and compassionate demeanor were sources of guidance and laughter to all who knew him.

As we bid farewell to Philip, we celebrate a life well-lived, a family cherished, and a community enriched by his presence. He will be profoundly missed, more than he could have known. In honor of Philip’s dedication to kindness and discovery, donations are encouraged to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a cause close to his heart. May his spirit of generosity and love continue to inspire and live on through the lives he touched.
