Richard Lee Muir, Jr. was a devoted man of God, exceptional father, fun-loving grandfather, loyal friend and true craftsmen, who had an active, optimistic appreciation for the life he lived in Oak Grove, Missouri. He was born on February 19, 1943, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Marian Frances Williams and Richard Lee Muir. He closed his eyes peacefully for the last time on Friday, November 16, 2018 at home surrounded by family. As a young boy, Richard grew up on a farm that his grandparents managed just outside of Belton, Missouri. He once shared, “I followed my Grandad all over that farm from sun-up to sun-down until I was 10 years old.” At age 10, he moved to Grandview, Missouri, to live with his mother. He graduated in 1961 from Grandview High School with a love for fast cars, athletics and hard work. He attended Central Missouri State University. In 1963, he enlisted in the United States Navy serving a four-year tour. After returning home, he married his first wife of 17 years, Dixie Leighter. He was blessed with two daughters, Kimberly and Billie.
Whether it was carpentry, welding, or electrical, Richard’s work showed extraordinary talent, creativity, and dedication, much like the exceptional individual he was. He loved being active and enjoyed the outdoors.
Richard had a deep passion for knowledge, expertise, and craftsmanship. He didn’t just dabble in a hobby, he drove head first into it, soaking up vast amounts of detail and becoming a master on the subject. “Grampy can fix anything…” was a common family statement.
Richard was a modest, quiet, disciplined man of few words who was loyal, steadfast and committed to his beliefs and principles. He believed that you should live life by example. He was a devout family man who took his responsibilities seriously. His heart was huge and his faith was genuine. Richard was the rock and corner stone of the family… a true protector and provider. He was and will be a source of inspiration for us all.
After 75 full years of life, he has now been called home. His legacy and spirit lives on in the vibrant eyes of his two daughters, Kim Muir (Matt Lehane) and Billie Satrum (Robert Steffee); five grandchildren, Courtney Mayberry (Trey Floyd), Arin Monahan, Megan Vance (Matt Breshears), Nathan Burnett (Brooke Killough) and Brittney Burnett; nine great-grandchildren, Landyn, Teigan, Emma, Bradyn, Paisley, Haivyn, Paityn, Ella, and Hunter Lee Richard; and brother, Greg Olson (Karen).
Richard leaves us with countless warm memories. We were truly blessed to have him in our lives. He will forever be remembered by all whose lives he touched.
A Celebration of Richard’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 24th at First Baptist Church of Oak Grove. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until service time at the church.
