Sarah E. Pendergast


Sarah “Sally” Elizabeth (Watson) Pendergast, 74, of Independence, Missouri, formerly of Louisiana, Texas, Massachusetts, Alabama, and California, passed away Sunday, October 29, 2017.  Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 4th at Royer Funeral Home, Oak Grove.  The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Sally’s name to Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Sally was born on July 27, 1943, in Lafayette, Louisiana, the daughter of Roy and Anna (Purser) Watson, as the twin sister of Molly.  She and Molly were raised in Arcala, LA, on Hickory Knoll Farm.  Sally met her husband, Jim, while attending university in Hammond, LA. They were married in 1962 and had four children, James Edward, Jr., John Brittain, Joseph Patrick, and Thomas Roy.  She and Jim raised their children in Baton Rouge, LA and in Texarkana, TX.  Later, they lived in southeastern Massachusetts and Daphne, AL.  After Jim’s passing in 2010, She lived in Santa Barbara, CA, and Kansas City, MO.  Sally was deeply devoted to her husband and family. As a dedicated homemaker, she supported them tirelessly and always encouraged them to do their best. She taught her children the value of creativity and imagination. She imparted upon them the importance of fairness and respect for others.

Sally was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Texarkana. She helped manage religious education for the children of that congregation, and with Jim acted as a eucharist minister to the elderly.  Sally was a teacher of both religion and the arts.  She was a talented designer, illustrator, and writer.  She was a member of a singing troupe and the Garden Club.  Throughout her life, she was an eager and passionate student of design, religion, and spirituality.

Sally is survived by her sister, Mary “Molly” Anna Stagg of New Orleans, LA; her four children and their wives: Jim and Betsy of League City, TX, John and Claire of Santa Barbara, CA, Joe and Janine of Gex, France, and Tom and Gracie of Kansas City, MO; and six grandchildren: Megan, Macey, Mae, Quinn, Morris, and Max.
