Sharon Yvonne (Jones) Winter passed away on Wednesday, May 24th at the age of 83. She was born in Independence, Missouri to Wynne Davies and Elizabeth Irene Jones on October 23, 1939. Sharon graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1957. She received her Associates degree from Graceland University, Lamoni, IA, Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Central Missouri at Warrensburg, and Master of Arts in Curriculum Arts Integration from Lesley University, Cambridge, MA. Sharon taught for Denver Public Schools, the Independence School District and the Fort Osage School District, Independence, MO where she taught from 1984 until 2000 when she retired. Sharon was a lifelong and dedicated member of Community of Christ, attending the Liberty Street, Gudgell Park and Odessa congregations, sharing in family and music ministry, and often playing piano for worship services.
Sharon enjoyed sharing ministry at many youth camps as “Mother Nature,” cultivating curiosity about the wonder of nature. She was a musician who could make a piano sing and shared her talents with her grandchildren and many other children through patient piano lessons. Sharon loved her children and grandchildren fiercely, engaging with them in adventures and shenanigans and always making a pan of brownies magically appear. A family member recently described Sharon as “Love at its very best. An enduring lovely twinkle in her eyes. A mischievous grin. A hearty laugh. Rich talents that she always pooh-poohed and the kindest of hearts.” Sharon spent the last moments of her beautiful life ensuring that each person in her family knew how very much she loved them and chuckling through endless fond and crazy memories.
Sharon will be greatly missed by her husband of 50 years, Glenn Damon Winter, of Blue Springs, three children, Richard Wilson (Carrie), Greg Wilson (Kathy) and Julie Torpey (Noel); grandchildren, Drew Wilson (Lauren), Eli Wilson (Kellie), Evan Wilson, Ian Wilson, Addison Wilson, Hannah Wilson, Hayden Torpey, Ishbel Wilson and Dawson Torpey; great-grandchildren, Annie and Bennett; and brothers Pete Jones (Nancy) and Sheldon Jones (Shelley), and several cousins, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Thursday, June 1st, 2023, with visitation at 10:00 am and celebration of life at 11:00 am at Royer Funeral Home (100 Royer Lane Grain Valley, Missouri 64029). Graveside service will follow at Floral Hills East (25203 E US Highway 50, Lees Summit, MO 64086). Memorial donations can be made to Community of Christ Odessa Congregation, Campership Fund 1607 Deer Run Rd. Oak Grove, Missouri 64075.
