Sheila Gay Gardner, 72, of Independence, Missouri, departed this life on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. Her loving spirit touched many, but per the family’s request, a private gathering to honor her life will be planned by the family at a later date.
Born on May 13, 1953, in Independence, Missouri, Sheila was the daughter of William “Frank” Miles and Peggy Claudine Miles (Byrd). She was a 1971 graduate of William Chrisman High School.
Sheila married Marvin Gardner, the love of her life, on May 22, 1981. Together, they led a blessed life, exploring Wyoming, farming in Kansas, raising their children in Kingsville, MO, and eventually settling in Stover, MO to raise cattle. Following the sudden passing of her husband in 1996, Sheila returned to Kingsville, ultimately establishing her residence in Independence within the same neighborhood where she spent her childhood.
Sheila was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Gardner; her parents; and her sister, Pamela Elliot of Pittsburg, Kansas.
Her legacy lives on through her loving family: brother Garry Miles (Independence, MO); her children: Ray Collins (wife Brandie, Blue Springs, MO), Chris Collins (fiancé Sierra, Independence, MO), Sandy Lambirth (husband Rick, Independence, MO), Susan Gardner (Alfonzo, Independence, MO), and Jennifer Gardner (fiancé Matt, Independence, MO); 10 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
Sheila lived a rich and full life, defining her greatest blessings as her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved her family tremendously and that love was returned beyond measure. She will be greatly missed.

3 Jan 2026I met Sheila at Lord and Associates, Inc. where we both worked back in 2000. Sheila was always friendly and a fun person to be around. Her family meant everything to her. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.
