Sherry L. Magel

Sherry Lynn Magel (Shelton), 68 of Independence, MO passed away on October 25, 2023 at home, surrounded by her loving family, after an almost 5-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Sherry was born November 22, 1954 to John (Corkey) Shelton and Betty (Murphy) Shelton in Kansas City. Sherry graduated from Truman High School in 1973. She married Roy Sloan in 1973 and was blessed with 2 children, Jonathan Paul and Nichole.

In her early career she worked for Hallmark Cards.  In 1988, Sherry left Hallmark and began her in-home daycare.  She operated her daycare for over 30 years and was blessed to be a part of the lives of many children (and their families). She was a long-time member of Sycamore Hills Baptist Church. She loved her family, friends, and the Chiefs! She always provided an open door to welcome and take care of everyone. She had a heart of gold and would do anything she could for anyone.

Sherry is survived by her daughter, Nichole (Brad) Williams of Lee’s Summit; daughter-in-law, Jana Sloan of Blue Springs; sister, Judy (Roger) Moorman of Windsor, CO; brother, Reverend Robert (Sandy) Shelton of Plattsburg; sister-in-law, Terri Shelton of San Diego, CA; five grandchildren, Christopher Sloan, Christian Sloan, Riley Williams, Talan Williams and Nick Williams and many nieces and nephews and other family members.  Sherry was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jonathan Paul Sloan and brother, John Richard Jr.

A Celebration of Life service will be held for Sherry on Saturday, November 11 at Sycamore hills Baptist Church (15200 E. 39th Street S., Independence, MO 64055). Visitation will be held from 9-11 AM, with the Celebration of Life service immediately following at 11 a.m. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sycamore Hill Baptist Church Joy Sunday School Class, First Baptist Church of Plattsburg (501 W. Broadway, Plattsburg, MO 64477) or the University of Kansas Cancer Center (www.kucancercenter.org/give) in memory of Sherry Magel.

    Dearest Cousin,
    You would be so proud of Nichole and Jana today! Your service was beautiful. I know you would have loved it!! You are so missed here but we also know that you are at peace and surrounded by your precious loved ones in Heaven. In this brings us peace, as we know we will see you again one day.
