Barbara Ann Wood Owings, 82, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 9, 2014 at Royer Funeral Home, Grain Valley, MO; burial in Owings-George Cemetery, Oak Grove, MO. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to The George Historic Cemetery Association.
Barbara was born September 14, 1931, in Independence, Missouri, the daughter of T.K. and Mary Francis (Stanfield) Wood. Her brother, Richard Stanley Wood was born New Year’s Day 1936. Barbara married Duaine Owings on April 29, 1950 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. They had three children: Duaine Ray Owings, David Lee Owings, & Donald Scott Owings.
Barbara attended Independence schools and finally North East High School. She was very proud to have worked at IBM and TWA, and took the family on many airline and car vacation trips. At one point, she owned a travel agency. She and Duaine worked very hard raising a family and building two homes over a period of years. She took a keen interest in all the neighborhood children and took them horseback riding, fishing and on vacations. Barbara had an extraordinary relationship with her Owings in-laws, as did her grandfather, Neville Miller Wood, both greatly enjoying trips to the farm. She loved church and going to Bible study.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents & her husband.
Her survivors include her three sons; three grandchildren: Jason Grant Owings, Valerie Ann Owings, & Shelby Ailene Owings; seven great-grandchildren: Dustin Luke Francis, Elizabeth Nicole Hixon, Alyssa Janae Kobel, Parker Owings, Caden Owings, Cael Joseph Beshore, & Grace Marie Beshore; and four great great-grandchildren: Peyton Kobel, Max Kobel, Avery Owings, & Bradley Francis.
