Doris M. Hurst


Doris Mae Hurst, 91, of Independence, Missouri, passed away on Monday, August 6, 2018.  Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, August 13th at New Salem Funeral Home, Independence, MO; burial in New Salem Cemetery, Independence. The family will greet guests from 2:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Doris was born April 29, 1927 in Advance, Arkansas, the daughter of John W. and Ethel (Whorley) Shelor. She worked as a Customer Support Manager for Commerce Bank in Kansas City, MO.  Doris loved gardening, canning, going to garage sales and auctions, and playing bingo.  She loved music and singing and was huge fan of Royals baseball, especially when they were winning.  

Doris is survived by her husband of 66 years, Rudolph Hurst; two sons: Thomas Hurst of Alma, KS, and Charles Hurst (Renee Morgan) of Lawrence, KS; one brother, Billy Joe Shelor of Indianapolis, IN; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Gary Hurst; two sisters, Virginia Lewis and Corinne Hurst; and five brothers: Karl, Larry, Stephen, Gene, and Jim Shelor.

  1. Aunt Doris was one of those rare gems that you see only once in a life time. She touched so many people both relatives and friends. I will always have fond memories of visiting her and her family in the summertime when my family would drive up from Florida. She was always so positive and quick witted and spoke from her heart. I am glad that she is no longer in pain and I will miss our telephone talks. My heart goes out to her Family. Godspeed to you Aunt Doris and I hope you are back home again with my Mom who was one of your dearest childhood friends. I will never forget you and will always love you. – Lewis
