Greta M. Alexander


Greta Mae Alexander, 88, of Independence, Missouri, passed away Monday, March 5, 2018.  Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 10th at First Baptist Church, Independence. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until service time at the church.  In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Benevolent Fund of First Baptist Church, Missouri 500 W. Truman Rd, Independence, MO 64050.

Greta was born on May 3, 1929 to Harrell W. Famer and Grace Inez Plummer Farmer in Platte county, Missouri. Greta was raised and graduated high school in Weston, Missouri. She later attended Southwest Baptist College, Bolivar, Missouri where she met James (Jim) W. Alexander of Poplar Bluff, Missouri. They dated 8 years, during which time both completed their bachelor degrees at Oklahoma Baptist University and after when Jim was enlisted into the United States Air Force and deployed to Europe. Greta completed her master’s degree in Social Science and worked as the first Social Worker for the Kansas City Housing Authority. They were married on September 16, 1955. Greta and Jim adopted 3 children and moved to Independence in 1969. She was active member of First Baptist Church Independence where she served as Sunday school teacher for preschoolers and then special needs class for decades.

Greta is survived by her husband of 62 years, James (Jim) W Alexander, Independence, MO; son, John Alexander and his wife Kim Alexander of Bates City, MO; son, Joe Alexander of Glen Allen, MO and twin sister, Jane Cook and her husband Jim of Forsythe, MO; granddaughter, Brittania De La Cruz, Independence; grandson, Alex Milton and his wife Ashley of Branson, MO; granddaughter, Jessica Knight and her husband Nick of Grain Valley, MO; grandson, Jacob Alexander of Bates City; granddaughter, Mariah Alexander of Glen Allen; and 4 great-grandchildren, Kevin De La Cruz, Streeter Milton, Trinity Knight and Conner Alexander.
